Submit a Proposal

PROPOSAL SUBMISSION DEADLINE IS MAY 15, 2009

2009 Conference Themes

You are invited to submit a proposal that reflects one or more of the following themes.

Main Conference Theme: Disability in America: Inalienable Rights for All

Co-Sponsored by the American Association on Health and Disability

For many years, stakeholders in the disability community have identified significant inequalities in many areas between people with and without disabilities. These disparities hinder many people with disabilities from fully enjoying the rights guaranteed to all Americans under the Constitution and prevent them from becoming actively contributing members of their communities.

The 2009 Southwest Conference on Disability is soliciting presentations that

  • document or explore disparities in a particular area, including education, independent living, economic status, employment, housing and access to services, or among people with particular disabilities or
  • focus on solutions to overcoming inequality through innovative policies or programs that reduce or eliminate inequality based on disability and which contribute to creating a country in which disability is no longer a barrier to equal rights.

We welcome contributions from the policy, academic, healthcare and advocacy communities which address a general perspective, or which focus on particular types of disabilities or populations, including veterans, women, or ethnic minorities.

Special Emphasis Theme: Addressing the Long-Term Challenges Faced By Wounded Warriors

Co-Sponsored by the New Mexico Department of Veteran's Services

While much attention has been given in the press to the many immediate needs and challenges faced by returning veterans with disabilities, including medical and rehabilitation issues, far less has been paid to the problems faced by wounded warriors through the lifespan. We are soliciting presentations that focus not only on the short-term problems faced by returning veterans with disabilities, but also their long-term needs, including such topics as independent living; education; employment; community and social support; family issues; and quality of life. Presentations are especially welcome that focus on the unique challenges of women veterans with disabilities.

Special Emphasis Theme: Improving Quality of Life of People With Disabilities Through Evaluating Disability Programs, Policies, and Services

Co-Sponsored by New Mexico Evaluators Association

Conference organizers of the 2009 Southwest Conference on Disability are soliciting presentations on topics related to evaluating programs, policies and services that impact individuals with disabilities. Rigorous evaluation is needed to continually improve disability-related policies, pro-grams and services and identify programs that are not working optimally. Possible topics include innovative ways to evaluate programs; evaluations of policies and legislation that will have an impact on individuals with disabilities; evaluations of programs serving students and others with disabilities, and tools and techniques designed to improve and build capacity within disability advocacy organizations. Presentations that provide tools and techniques for individuals interested in evaluating their disability programs, policies and services are especially encouraged.

Types of Sessions

All sessions except the poster session are 60 and 75 minutes in length. Because the goal of the conference is to bring together people from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences to share their knowledge, presenters are asked to target their presentations at a general audience and avoid highly specialized jargon.

Breakout Sessions

These traditional presentations highlight new or emerging research findings, promising new programs or policies, or explore a topic from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Roundtables

Roundtables are moderated, semi-structured sessions that avoid lengthy formal presentations and focus on moderated discussion and debate. Presenters at policy roundtables frame the issues to be discussed and lead the discussion and debate.

Interactive Workshops

Interactive Workshops are hands-on learning opportunities focused on a particular topical area or need. Presenters are responsible for providing any training materials they wish to distribute to participants.

Poster Session

On Thursday, October 1st, there will be a 1 1/2 hour poster session. Poster sessions are designed to present highlights of innovative programs, research projects or services by presenting graphics, charts, photographs and text. Each poster board will have approximately 4' x 8' of usable space for display. Pushpins will be provided. Poster boards do not have electrical outlets or internet connections. Presenters should remain by their poster board for the entire session.

How to Submit a Proposal

The deadline for proposals is May 15th, 2009. Proposals must be submitted electronically via e-mail or by regular mail on CD or 3.5" disk in Word or Rich Text Format (RTF). Proposals must include the following.

  • Title
  • Type of presentation format (breakout, roundtable, interactive workshop or poster)
  • A list of presenters and affiliation for each, with moderator first and list of non-presenting authors
  • Contact information (address, telephone, e-mail and fax as applicable) for all presenters
  • A brief bio-sketch for all presenters that will be included in the conference abstract and contact book
  • A brief explanation of how the session relates to the conference theme; and
  • An abstract of 50 words or less containing learning objectives (what knowledge or skills will the audience gain from the session?). Continuing education units (awarded to conference participants registered for CEUs) will be assigned to sessions based on these learning objectives.

Abstracts of accepted proposals will be used in the conference abstract book as they are submitted. Please edit and proofread abstracts before submission.

Proposals cannot be considered until all of the information listed above is received. Notification of acceptance will be sent to contact persons in June 2009.

All presenters and co-presenters must register for the conference and make payment arrangements no later than August 10, 2009. Sessions of presenters who fail to register and arrange for payment will be eliminated from the conference program. Organizations granting Continuing Education Units (CEUs) require that we receive a curriculum vita or resume from all presenters.

Proposals should be emailed to swdisabilityconference@salud.unm.edu or sent in Word or Rich Text Format (RTF) on disk through regular mail to:
