Topic: Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)

Title: Autism Self-Study
Description: This course is presented for adult service providers and offers an overview of autism through use of a handbook and video (video can be borrowed from the CDD LINC program, or loaned from a Department of Health regional office.)
Length: 1-2 hours

Title: Introduction to Autism
Description: This presentation provides and introduction to autism spectrum disorders and briefly defines the disorder, outlines diagnostic information, and provides information on characteristics which define the disorder.
Length: 3 hours

Title: Autism in the Family
Description: This training is for families of persons who have been recently diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. It will discuss how it affects the entire family and their community, as well as characteristics and their impact, to better support the child.
Length: 4 hours

Title: An Insight Into Autism Spectrum Disorders
Description: This training is for families of persons with autism who have been diagnosed with autism at least 2 years previously. It discusses the key impact of autism on the family and ways to support your family members.
Length: 3-4 hours

Title: Navigating the Service Delivery System
Description: This presentation is for families of persons with autism and focuses on understanding the many facets of the service delivery system, including SSI, DD waiver, private insurance, Medicaid, and schools.
Length: 4 hours

Title: Understanding and Working with Persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Description: This training provides information on prevalence, cause, diagnostic information, cultural perspective, characteristics, family perspective, resources, and general strategies.

Title: Assessment, Communication & Visual Supports for People with ASD
Description: This presentation is designed to follow the "Understanding" training and will provide and overview of the key assessment considerations, communication, and visual techniques to use in developing community supports for persons with autism.

Description: This presentation is designed to follow the "Foundations I" training and will provide an overview of the key sensory, social, and behavior characteristics and supports for persons with autism spectrum disorders.

Title: Strategies in Autism: Assessment and Application for Persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Description: This presentation is designed to follow the Foundations II training and will provide an overview of what to consider when determining strategies for persons with ASD, as well as describing a variety of key strategies and ideas that have proven successful with persons with ASD.

Description: This presentation will define the medical diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders, current treatment, and partnering with families.

Description: This presentation will provide an overview of autism, including more specific information on communication, social, sensory and behavior challenges for persons with autism. It will also include information on schedules and visual supports.

Description: This presentation offers information regarding challenges in communication of persons with autism spectrum disorders and some suggestions of activities that are helpful to improve communication.

Title: Communicative Characteristics and Supports for Persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Description: This presentation will provide a brief description of overall characteristics of characteristics of persons with ASD,and then define communication characteristics in depth. It will detail the three D's of language: delays, disorders, differences and will discuss how these characteristics affect function in the home, school, workplace and community. Also, possible communicative supports to increase function will be suggested.

Title: Communication for Persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders in Preschool Years
Description: This presentation will review typical early communication development and compare and contrast with communication of persons with ASD. It will discuss communication strategies, classroom organization, and consistency across settings.

Title: PECS Overview
Description: This presentation provides an overview of the Picture Exchange Communication System for young children with autism spectrum disorders or older children who are non-verbal.

Title: Enhancing Engagement In Children with ASD
Description: This training provides information on motivational strategies, communication strategies, and social strategies which help to engage persons with ASD.

Title: Visual Schedules
Description: This presentation provides information on why and how to include visual schedules into the life of a persons with autism spectrum disorders, and illustrates examples of schedules.

Title: Classroom Environmental Structure (Can be adapted to other environments outside the classroom)
Description: This presentation provides information about setting up routines, use of visual supports, and adapting the physical environment to help people with autism spectrum disorders understand what is expected of them.

Title: Make and Take Activities for Persons with Autism
Description: This presentation provides an opportunity to make and take visual supports for persons with autism. Please bring the foundation materials to make the schedule, activity, communication system, etc. There will be a Autism Program facilistator to assist in developing supports, and basic office supplies (stapler, tape, glue, paper, clips, glue guns, etc.)

Title: Behavior Overview
Description: This presentation provides information about the general characteristics of autism and defines behavior characteristics in more depth. The presentation also provides some suggestions which may be of assistance in supporting the challenging behavior of persons with autism spectrum disorders.

Title: An Overview of PRT-Pivotal Response Training
Description: This training provides information on Pivotal Response Training for children with autism spectrum disorders who are higher functioning.
Length: 2-3 hours

Title: Behavior Management in Autism Spectrum Disorders (Age grouping will be defined)
Description: This presentation will provide information on autism and the behavior characteristics of autism. It will provide basic behavior management techniques training, as well as how these techniques can assist a person with ASD's. Behavior supports and suggestions will be offered.

Title: Measuring Effectiveness in Intervention in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Description: This training will provide information on how to measure the change in behavior that can be seen in persons with autism spectrum disorders. Specific tools will be taught.

Title: The overview of Social Development in Persons with ASD Description: A breif overview of social development & Supports.
Length: 2 - 3 hours

Title: Social Development and Supports for Persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Description: This presentation will provide indepth information on the social development, social characteristics, and social supports for persons with autism spectrum disorders.
Length: 6 hours. Activities, video examples and handouts will provide deeper understanding in social issues.

Title: Social Activities, Supports, and Friendship Groups for Persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Description: This presentation will provide information on the importance of focus on the social activities that a person with autism spectrum disorder has the opportunity to participate in. Suggested supports and activities will be outlined.

Title: Social Stories Video Workshop
Description: This presentation is a video workshop presented by Carol Gray, the person who developed Social Stories. The training provides information on social understanding in ASD with step-by-step instructions in the development of social stories (workbook included). A Autism Program facilitator is available to guide discussion.

Other Training Opportunities through Autism Programs

Short Presentations: Autism Programs offers 1-2 hour presentations that provide a general overview of autism spectrum disorders to a specific group.

Annual Lectures: One or two-day lectures are provided annually which bring in nationally recognized speakers in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorders. The Horn series is offered every other year and has a focus on adult populations of persons with autism spectrum disorders. Pre-Service Courses: Training is offered to colleges and universities for classes needing information on autism spectrum disorders. Courses have been taught through the departments of: Special Education, Communication Disorders, Nursing, Psychology, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Social Work, Counseling, Family Studies, and through the Medical School.

Continuing Ed. Coursework: Autism Programs has provided and will continue to provide coursework opportunities through college continuing education departments to provide information regarding autism spectrum disorders.
