Why Is The CDD Administering The SIS?

Until now, the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) was conducting SIS assessments in New Mexico through a contract with DDSD. However, AAIDD does not normally take on long-term contracts to administer the SIS assessment. The Department of Health looked for a New Mexico-based organization that is knowledgeable about developmental disabilities and was an unbiased, neutral organization. In 2013, the Department asked the Center for Development and Disability at the University of New Mexico’s School of Medicine to take over statewide administration of the SIS beginning in July, 2014.

The CDD’s job is to ensure that the SIS assessment is administered accurately and fairly. The CDD SIS assessors have been trained and certified by AAIDD to give a fair, accurate and unbiased assessment.  The CDD is not involved in the process of using SIS results for resource allocation. CDD SIS assessors send results of the SIS assessment to the Developmental Disabilities Supports Division (DDSD) of the NM Department of Health for this purpose.
