Project Našnitin Donates Books and Supplies to Resource Center

In December Project Na'nitin gave a generous donation of books and supplies to the CDD Resource Center. The materials include over 150 books on human development and disability, with a focus on enhancing the Resource Centeršs collection in the area of Native American culture and children with special needs. Some new titles include:

Ref G Nav Navajo atlas

Ref G Nat Native American almanac

Ref G-M Ber Native American health resources

C 2.1 Ham Childhood speech language and listening problems

C 2.5 Gre Building healthy minds

G-M Rho American Indian health  (see review in this newsletter)

Araceli Domingo and Judy Kepler have worked very hard to process and catalog these books, most of which are now on the shelves and ready to loan. Please come to the Resource Center to check them out!

Supplies donated by Našnitin to the Resource Center have assisted staff in processing these materials and will help to deliver information to communities throughout New Mexico. It is this kind of participation by programs like Našnitin that helps the Resource Center provide current and relevant information to professionals, agency staff, families, and others in our state. Thanks again, Našnitin !

RC Cataloging Project Underway

A welcome burst of year-end funding enabled the Resource Center to purchase books in many subject areas of development and disability last December. Books on autism, early intervention, assistive technology, blind-deaf resources as well as general reference sources, including Native American medical books, handbooks, and encyclopedias are among the latest additions to the RC collection.

I addition to these, material updates to the reference collection acquired starting in October last year as part of the Collection Development Project, as well as ongoing donations from CDD staff, are also being cataloged and processed.

All of these resources will soon be available for use. Stay tuned for further announcements.

Book Highlights

American Indian health: innovations in  health care, promotion and policy.

The tone of this book is largely that of a reference text and an effort has been made to present facts dispassionately as they are currently known and understood.  It touches on the archaeologic perspectives on Native American origins, a wide variety of health issues, collected data,  special cultural and ethical considerations, and the U.S. governments' responsibilities toward Native American people.

Awakening to disability: nothing about us without us  by Karen G. Stone.

" This book is about breaking barriers.  It's about strength and compassion.  And it is wonderfully informative, because it is written by an honest insider whose grit is immense.  Thank you Karen, for showing us that we're all human-and that disability is only a small matter." Larry Dossey, M.D.

Reading this book will add a new dimension to your perception of  all people - family, friends, colleagues, people in a crowd.  I enjoyed this easy  to read, not too technical book.    Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that we are all human.   Once the barriers are removed we are open to learning more about others as well as about ourselves.
