Introduction:

Courses 1-7 are to be taken one after another. Computer skills are built and information created from one course to the next. Course objectives are listed under each Course Title below.

Course #1: Basic Computer

This Course is for a person who has not used a computer before.  You will learn to:

      Identify what is a computer.

      Think about why you want to learn how to use the computer.

      Think about three things a computer can do for you.

      Identify four parts of a computer.

      Turn on the computer.

      Identify what is the “desktop” on the monitor screen.

      Find an icon.

      Use the mouse to open and close an icon.

■   Turn off the computer.

Course #2: Basic Keyboarding Part 1

This Course is for someone who wants to learn how to type and use the computer keyboard.  A person must be able to use the keyboard before moving on to the rest of the courses.  You will learn to:

        Place your hands on the “Home Row” keys.

        Type letters and numbers, using the correct finger on your left hand.

Course #2b: Basic Keyboarding Part 2 (Complete Part 1 before)

This Course is for someone who wants to learn how to type and use the computer keyboard.  A person must be able to use the keyboard before moving on to the rest of the courses.  You will learn to:

        Type letters and numbers, using the correct finger on your right hand.

        Use the mouse to open Microsoft Word from the “Start” button.

        Type one sentence about yourself using the “Home Row” key position.

        Identify nine basic keys of the keyboard.

        Use the following basic keyboard keys to type a paragraph about yourself:  shift, enter and space bar.

Course #3a: Basic Windows Part 1 (Need a 3 ½” Disc)

This Course is for a first-time Windows user.  You will learn to:

■    Identify and use the following: “My Computer”, “My Documents”, “Recycle Bin.”

■    Open a Word document; use cursor and scroll bars; resize your window; type a paragraph about yourself and minimize the window.

■    Identify the A drive.

■    Insert a 3½” disc into the “brain” or CPU.

■    Maximize, title, save and close the document in the A drive.

■    Find and open the saved document from the A drive.

Course #3b: Basic Windows Part 2 (Need the 3 ½” Disc used in Course #3a)

This Course is for a first-time Windows user.  You will learn to:

        Identify the C, D and E drives.

        Use the right mouse button.

        Click and drag with the mouse.

        Create, title and save a folder.

        Create a new Word document and save it to a folder in “My Documents.”

Course #4: Basic Microsoft Word

This Course is for a first-time Microsoft Word user.  You will learn to:

■    Think about what Microsoft Word can do for you.

        Use the Word toolbars.

■    Use the Word pull-down menus.

Course #5: Basic Internet (Need a working Internet Service Provider)

This Course is for a first-time Internet user.  You will learn to:

        Identify what is the Internet.

        Think about how the Internet can help you.

        Get on the Internet.

        Identify what is a browser.

■    Use the following browser buttons:  back, forward, stop, home, address bar, refresh/reload.

        Use the address bar to go to a website.

        Use a link on a website.

        Save a website on your favorites/bookmarks.

        Set your homepage.

        Hang up/sign off from the Internet.

Course #6: Basic Web Searching (Need a working Internet Service Provider)

This Course is for a first-time Web Searcher.  You will learn to:

        Identify five things you can search for on the Internet.

        Use the search button on your browser.

        Review the results of your search.

        Identify what is a search engine.

        Use a keyword or key phrase to complete a search.

        Learn about things to be cautious of when searching on the web.

        Check a web site for accuracy.

Course #7a: Basic Email Part 1 (Need a working Internet Service Provider and someone’s email address)

This Course is for a first-time Emailer.  You will learn to:

        Think about what email can do for you.

        Set up an email account in Yahoo! mail.

        Read an email message.

        Set up your address book.

Course #7b: Basic Email Part 2 (Need a working Internet Service Provider and someone’s email address)

This Course is for a new Emailer.  You will learn to:

■    Compose and send an email message.

■    Reply to an email message

■    Send and receive attachments.
