The Self-Directed Family Supports Program is a statewide program that assists families to better meet the needs of their sons and daughters with disabilities and enhances the individuals ability to live successfully in their home and community. The program, which began as a pilot in 2000, serves approximately 176 individuals and their families each year who are closest to being allocated to the DD Waiver.
Local Family Resource Specialists assist participants to develop an individual support plan and budget and to access resources. The program is based on respect for families and recognition of their expertise, diversity and unique characteristic.
The program is supported with funds from State General Funds, through the Developmental Disabilities Supports Division, in partnership with the Center for Developmental Disabilities.
"Family support programs make use of structured services and supports, as well as informal or natural supports from friends, neighbors, extended family or others in the community."
