Syllabus

Course Title: 

Functional Behavior and Positive Supports, an online web course.

Course Purpose:

The course utilizes the DISCUSS model developed at the Health Science Center, School of Medicine Center for Development and Disability. It was developed to promote functionally-based assessments within school settings to help promote positive behavior in students. 

Course Sponsor:

The University of New Mexico, School of Education will offer this course for 3 graduate or undergraduate credit hours or Continuing Education Units. The University of New Mexico Center for Development and Disability developed this web  course through funding provided by the New Mexico State Department of Education Special Education Unit and the Albuquerque Public Schools.

There is no cost to take the course unless you wish credit through the University of New Mexico.

Objectives of the Functional Behavior and Positive Supports Course.

This course has been developed to promote functionally based assessments within school settings to help promote positive behavior in students.

The specific objectives of this course are:

  1. Participants will understand the historical perspective of functional behavioral analysis to promote a better understanding of the evolution of the field.

  2. Participants will identify appropriate curricular and environmental supports as primary means of promoting appropriate behavior.

  3. Participants will identify, define and work through examples of using functional analysis of behavior.

  4. Participants will be introduced to data collection methods.

  5. Participants will use data to develop positive interventions.

Get acquainted with the course; virtual conference center
-Put in your bio to begin the process of creating an online "community of learners"

-Read Remington article (mailed in home packet)

-Review power point presentations

-Be ready to discuss historical and philosophical perspectives

Week Two 

Functional Behavior Analysis

-Read articles (Horner/Dunlap)

-Review power point of Functional Analysis

-Discuss definitions of functional analysis

-Discuss steps of functional analysis

Week Three 

Discuss "Judy"; Steps one and two of steps of functional analysis

Week Four 

Discuss "Judy", Steps three and four of steps of functional analysis

Week Five 

 

Behavior Intervention Plans

-Review power point presentations

-Proactive approaches

-Crises intervention

-Positive Behavior Support

 

Week Six 

Applying Methods of Intervention
-Wrap Up

-On line evaluation/focus group
