The videophone is a small, portable unit that connects using a color television, telephone and analog phone line (e.g., not a digital or DSL line). It allows for a two-way live video on the television at approximately 15 frames per second. Audio is transmitted via the telephone. Uses of the videophone may be limited due to the quality of the connection.
Each partner will have a videophone. The site coordinator will schedule the videophone consultation with the CDD or other provider with videophone capabilities.
Interactive video conferencing is the transmission of high quality, real-time audio and video between two or more locations. There are two common standards for interactive video conferencing. The H.320 is for switched circuit telecommunications (dedicated T1 or ISDN) and the H.323 for Internet Protocol networks. Currently we primarily use the H.320 standard, but most sites have H.323 capability. The network's video units range in manufacturer from PictureTel, VTel and Polycom.
Each site with T1 access will have a technological assistant who knows and understands the technology. T1 lines are installed in specific locations and are not moveable. In order to schedule a videoconference via T1 technology, contact the Center for Development and Disability (CDD).
