Search Engines

AltaVista
This search engine is very comprehensive, almost too much so. Good luck trying to get the same sites a second search.

WebCrawler
The WebCrawler is another Web Search Engine. It searches the Web and either searches in real-time for a query or builds an index for later use.

Yahoo!
Arguably the best and most comprehensive WWW site directory. You can use keyword searches or browse by category.

Infoseek
An interesting facet of this search engine is it's ability to search the results of a previous search.

Snap
This is a fairly new search engine that promises to be something big.

ArchiePlex
This link will take you to web page with a comprehensive list of archie sites. Archie retrieves and indexes information for widely distributed collections of data.

Veronica
This tool searches many different Gopher sites around the world

Newsgroups

Usenet's newsgroups are at the very heart of the Internet. In these electronic bulletin boards, you can meet people with similar interests, find out about jobs, learn about events and discoveries before they appear in newspapers or journals, and get answers to questions. Unfortunately, you may have to dig through inane, obnoxious or misleading postings, because, after all, anybody can post in Usenet, and practically everybody does. Because their nature changes daily, we cannot hope to give you an accurate review of the newsgroups listed below (except for the clari.* groups which are moderated and contain real newspaper reports from services like the Associated Press and Reuters.) If you haven't used a newsgroup before, you might want to read Using WWW to Read Usenet News.
