This project was funded through the Legislature for two task forces to study how to remedy an eroding capacity of obstetric care, including all licensed providers: OB-GYNs, Certified Nurse Midwives, Family Practice physicians, and Licensed Midwives, due to cost and availability of professional liability insurance. CDD co-sponsored a state wide Symposium with the NM Health Policy Commission in May, 2008, bringing together health care leaders from the states’ hospitals, public service and provider communities. The Task Force’s final recommendation to the Legislature was to work on design and implementation of an “administrative system,” such as Health Courts to replace the current law-suit based tort system for patient injury in childbirth in New Mexico. CDD supports continued work on designing an administrative system for consideration by the New Mexico Legislature and the public.
Division staff facilitated the work of the Second Task Force on Obsteric Health Care Liability Insurance for the Health Policy Commission.
