Overview of Deaf-blindness with an Emphasis in Communication: An Online Web course

This course is offered yearly, pending enrollment numbers. There is a $100.00 course fee to participate for out of state residents.

The Project for New Mexico Children and Youth Who Are Deaf-blind, which is part of the Center for Development and Disability at the University of New Mexico, created the course through funding provided by the US Department of Education, New Mexico State Department of Education, New Mexico Department of Health, Family Infant Toddler Program, and the Albuquerque Public Schools.

This on-line course provides an insight into the world of deaf-blindness. The definitions, causes, and learning consequences of deaf-blindness are defined and explored. Simulations are included to facilitate experiences similar or closely related to deaf-blindness. Virtual Conference center discussions are maintained throughout the duration of the course to facilitate learning, sharing, and constructive brainstorming. The course is designed for families, individuals, or educational teams working with individuals who are deaf-blind. A Certificate of Completion is provided to participants upon completion of the course.

Learning Objectives include:

Following completion of this fourteen-week course, the learner will have:

  • Participated and interacted online using internet and web tools.
  • Learned the definition and scope of deaf-blindness.
  • Experienced a visual impairment.
  • Completed a functional analysis of communicative intent.
  • Completed a communication profile.

Course Fee: There is a $100.00 fee to take the class for out of state (New Mexico) residents.

Assessments and Interventions: Case Studies in Deaf-blindness

This course is offered periodically, pending enrollment numbers. There is a $100.00 course fee to participate for out of state (New Mexico) residents. A Certificate of Completion is provided to participants upon completion of course.

The Project for New Mexico Children and Youth Who Are Deaf-blind, which is part of the Center for Development and Disability at the University of New Mexico, created the course through funding provided by the US Department of Education, New Mexico State Department of Education, New Mexico Department of Health, Family Infant Toddler Program, and the Albuquerque Public Schools.

This is a web-based distance education course designed for families, service providers, and educators working with children and youth who are deaf-blind. The course will be taught through Case Tutorials in a Problem Based Learning approach. The Case Tutorials will reflect real life issues that are of concern to families and service providers of children who are deaf-blind. Through these cases, participants will discuss the delivery of appropriate services, alternate assessments, inclusion of students in natural settings, positive behavior supports, and transition issues. The course is offered once a year pending student enrollment.

Learning Objectives Include:
Following completion of this 8-week course, the learner will have:

  • Described various diagnoses and syndromes that effect or result in vision and hearing loss.
  • Described the effect that vision and hearing loss has on the development of the child.
  • Developed strategies for successful trans-disciplinary teamwork.
  • Demonstrated the skills/strategies necessary for the successful collaboration between families and school professionals.
  • Developed and implemented ongoing assessment and intervention strategies for working with children and youth with deaf-blindness.
  • Become more familiar with intent of IDEA relative to public policy.
