New Mexico Commission for the Blind

New Mexico School for the Visually Handicapped (NMSVH)
Information on local and national services available for persons with visual handicaps. Interesting links include: Braille Through Remote Learning (learn Braille on-line, and the new Mexico Commission for the Blind.

Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (TSBVI)
This is an extensive web-site. It includes information on Adaptive Technology Resources, Instructional resources, Eye anomalies and diseases, TSBVI publications, See-Hear Newsletter, Discussion Rooms and Links to other vision-related web-sites. 

V.I. Guide
This site has extensive information, including the unusual "Entertainment" sub-category that contains information on speech-friendly computer games, movie reviews for blind individuals, and sites where you can listen to audio versions of books, music, and newspapers. This site also provides access to "The BlindRing".

Hadley School for the Blind
The Hadley School for the Blind offers over 90 different distance education classes in a variety of subjects including Braille, Technology, Independent Living, Recreation, Parent/Family Education, and others This classes are offered at no charge to the student. In order to take these courses, you must either be a blind adult, related to a blind person, or a professional in the blindness field.

Perkins School for the Blind
Perkins was the first school for the blind in the United States. They have been serving clients who are blind, visually handicapped, deafblind and multi-handicapped for almost 170 years. The associated Hilton/Perkins Program is committed to "improving the quality of life for children worldwide who are multi-handicapped, blind, or deafblind."

Association for the Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER)

American Foundation for the Blind (AFB)
The mission of the American Foundation for the Blind is to enable people who are blind or visually impaired to achieve equality of access and opportunity that will ensure freedom of choice in their lives. AFB fulfills this mission through four primary areas of activity regarding the nonmedical aspects of blindness and visual impairment:

  • Development, Collection, and Dissemination of Information
  • Identification, Analysis, and Resolution of Critical Issues
  • Education of the Public and Policymakers as to the Needs and Capabilities of People Who are Blind or Visually Impaired
  • Production and Distribution of Talking Books and Other Audio Materials

A great source for special media, books, & materials for blind and visually impaired persons.

Whether you are an educator, professional, parent, consumer, student, or just someone interested in special education, find what you need here at SpEdEx. They have strived to provide resources such as links, online documents, listings of professionals, job listings, school and university listings, conference announcements, a discussion area, and "poster sessions" in easy-to-use formats.

National Family Association for Parents of the Visually Impaired
The National Association for Parents of the Visually Impaired (NAPVI) is a non-profit organization of, by and for parents committed to providing support to the parents of children who have visual impairments. NAPVI is a core partner for the Families & Advocates Partnership for Education (FAPE) project spearheaded by the Parent Advocacy Coalition for Education Rights (PACER).

National Family Association for Deaf-blind
The National Family Association for Deaf-Blind (NFADB) is a non-profit, volunteer-based family association. Our philosophy is that individuals who are deaf-blind are valued members of society and are entitled to the same opportunities and choices as other members of the community.

Foundation Fighting Blindness
The urgent mission of The Foundation Fighting Blindness is to discover the causes, treatments, preventions, and cures for retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, Usher syndrome, and other related retinal degenerations. This site provides information about macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, Usher Syndrome, & other retinal degenerative diseases.

This site contains basic guidlines for making color choices that work for nearly everyone.

The BlindRing
The BlindRing is a web-ring designed to join together the home pages and web sites that are either run by blind individuals or are for the blind. The ring is like a circle. Once you have made contact with the BlindRing site, you can follow the Ring by going to the next site, previous site, a random site, or list all of the sites in the BlindRing (as of June 2000 there are 197 sites). You can access the BlindRing through the VI Guide.
