Syllabus

Course Title:
Overview of Deafblindness with an Emphasis in Communication

Course Sponsor:
The Project for New Mexico Children and Youth Who are Deafblind and Center for Development and Disability created the course through funding provided by the United States Department of Education, the New Mexico State Department of Education Special Education Unit, Albuquerque Public Schools and the New Mexico State Department of Health.

The course is offered periodically pending student enrollment.

FEE: The course is free to NM residents. There is a $100.00 course fee to take the class for out of state participants.

A Certificate of Completion will be provided to all participants who complete the course.

Hand-In-Hand: Essentials of Communication and Orientation and Mobility for Your Students Who Are Deaf-Blind. Vol. 1-2
Edited by: Kathleen Mary Huebner, Jeanne Glidden Prickett, Therese Rafalowski Welch, and Elga Joffee. Texts may be purchased directly from the American Foundation for the Blind at: http://www.afb.org/store Complete a search within the Bookstore for "Hand-In-Hand" to purchase on-line. Other sites available for on-line book purchasing are Amazon.com or Barnes and Noble.

Grading Schedule
Read and post responses on the Virtual Conference Center

  • (VCC) during 10 sessions for maximum of 15 points each ---POSSIBLE TOTAL 150 points
  • Complete 3 Quizzes: Maximum possible 25 points each ----POSSIBLE TOTAL 75 points
  • Complete Communication Profile: Maximum POSSIBLE 50 points
  • Complete Functional Analysis of Communicative Intent (Final): Maximum POSSIBLE 125 points

Grading Scale:

  • 400 - 360 = A
  • 359 - 320 = B
  • 319 - 280 = C
  • 279 - 240 = D
  • Below 240 = F

Course Objectives
Students will be able to:

  • participate and interact on-line utilizing CAUCUS (web software), manipulate a search and use email on the internet;
  • define deafblindness, read an audiogram, and experience a visual/hearing impairment;
  • complete a communication profile; and
  • complete a functional analysis of a communicative intent.

Course Schedule (Weeks of September 10th through December 14, 2007)
Dates are given as "Monday — Friday" as convention, however, this does not limit participants who wish to post responses on the weekends. (Instructors will be monitoring course activity in Caucus on weekends.)

October 22-26 Session 8: Quiz II-- Foundations for Early Communication and Module 7
October 29--November 2 Session 9: Basic Concepts in Communication
November 5-9 Session: 10: Quiz III--Beginnings of Communication
November 12-16 Session 11: Total Communication / Communication Profile
November 19-23 Thanksgiving Break
November 26-30 Session 12: Functional Analysis (Review tape and analyze)
December 3-7 Session 13: Video Tape and Analyze Student's Functional Communicative Intent--Final
December 10-11 Session 14: Work on Final
December 12-14

Submit/Mail Final—Course ends. Complete Online evaluation.
