Assignments

READ:
"The Foundations of Communication: First Steps" by Linda Lyle.
This reading will help you respond to the following questions and prepare your thoughts for a VCC discussion.

ON-LINE

THINK:
What are the signs of attachment or lack of attachment in your student? Try hand over hand assistance with your child or student and notice if you get resistance. Then try hand under hand, did you get the same resistance?

EXPERIMENT to find out which type of sensory experience is a positive for your child or student in each of the following categories:

  • touch: light, firm, how, when, etc.
  • movement: swinging, spinning, rocking, slow, fast, variable, how much, etc.
  • positions: What positions help the student be more alert? Relax? How much support is required? How much does the student have to work when he or she is supporting himself or herself in space? Does he or she have any energy left for learning?
  • vision: How much vision? Does it help to hold objects in certain visual fields? Does adding color, simplifying, high contrast, lighting help?
  • hearing: What sounds can the student hear? How loud, soft, near or far away must they be? Music?
