Friday Fax
Date: September 1, 2006
From: Dr. Eugene R. Thompson
Director of Educational Leadership
To keep you updated with activities taking place through
the CSPD efforts on the Navajo Nation, I am sending you a “Friday Fax”
with information about current and upcoming professional development activities.
Current Events
This past week, training and technical assistance was provided
as follows:
- The Reading Intervention Strategies training for K–3 teachers that
was originally scheduled for August 28 has been rescheduled to September
6, 2006.
- Yesterday, we had a successful one-day Navajo Nation Parent Conference
on Special Education that was well attended by over 250 parents and educators
at the Navajo Nation Museum in Window Rock. Dr. Sherry Allison delivered
an inspiring keynote address on the theme of The Role of Parents in the
Schools. The breakout sessions, panel discussion, and poster sessions were
outstanding and well attended. The feedback was very positive with participants
commenting that they received information to help them better address the
needs of Navajo children with disabilities.
- The Level I Residential Training for Chinle Agency begins tomorrow for
five consecutive Saturdays at the Chinle Boarding School. The course will
be ECME 115 – Guidance of Young Children, a three-credit course through
the University of New Mexico-Gallup.
- The final on-site school visits to correction action schools will be
conducted via a conference call with the school principal rather than an
on-site school visit.
