To keep you updated with activities taking place through the CSPD efforts on the Navajo Nation, I am sending you a “Friday Fax” with information about current and upcoming professional development activities.

Current Events

This past week, training and technical assistance was provided as follows:

• A copy of the registration form for the Parent Conference on Disabilities is attached to this fax.  The completed form can be faxed to (928) 871-7865.  The one-day conference will be held on Thursday, August 31, 2006 at the Navajo Nation Museum from 8:00 am–5:00 pm and is designed to provide information to families who have children with disabilities in schools.  Further information about the conference and registration can be obtained by calling the toll free number (866) 341-9918.
• The Western Navajo Agency Residential Institute is currently in progress at the Tuba City Boarding School.  Forty dormitory staff from five schools (Dennehotso Boarding School, Greyhills High School, Kayenta Community School, Leupp Schools, and Tuba City Boarding School) are participating in the three-credit course:  Educ 293 – Problems and Issues in Special Education.  A special thank you goes to the Tuba City Boarding School principal for allowing the use of their computer lab for staff training.  A huge thank goes to Peggy Garito and Genevieve of NAU for coordinating this one-week residential institute.  A big thank you also goes to the three instructors.
• The BIA Advisory Board for Special Education is having their meeting July 22–24, 2006 in Denver.  On Monday, July 24 from 12:15–1:00 p.m., parents of children with disabilities are encouraged to call in and provide comment on the BIA special education program.  Parents can call toll free number (888) 387-8686; on prompt, dial 427-4201.  A flyer is attached.  Please share this information with the parents in your schools.

A great big thank you goes to the Chinle and Western Navajo agencies for providing us a current directory of their schools and administrators.  If there are other agency or school offices that may have moved during the summer or if there are new personnel, we’d like your new addresses, phone numbers and fax numbers.  We want to make sure that the agency and school offices receive the Friday faxes at your new locations. 

Although we are mid way through the summer, schools may still contact us about how we might help in facilitating a plan of work for your agency or school or for providing training above and beyond what we have currently set out to do in the present scope of work.
