Friday Fax
Date: March 31, 2006
From: Dr. Eugene R. Thompson
Director of Educational Leadership
To keep you updated with activities taking place through
the CSPD efforts on the Navajo Nation, I am sending you a “Friday Fax”
with information about current and upcoming professional development activities.
Current Events
This past week, training and technical assistance was provided
as follows:
- Technical assistance was provided to Wingate High School in the finalization
of the Indian Demonstration Grant proposal submitted to the U.S. Department
of Education.
- Dear Tribal Letters (dated March 21, 2006) were sent to agencies and/or
schools from the Interior Department/Office of the Secretary regarding the
proposed Part B Funding Formula. There is an opportunity to provide written
comment. Comments or recommendations can be submitted to the DCMA (Attention:
Lynann Barbero) by April 14, 2006. In addition, there will also be a telephone
call in session scheduled for the five Navajo agencies (Chinle, Eastern,
Ft. Defiance, Shiprock, Western) on April 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
The toll free number to call into is: 1-888-455-3614 and the bridge/access
number is 27615. This will be an excellent opportunity for parents and interested
educators to provide comment and recommendations. You can get further information
by calling Louie Magdalena at DCMA (505) 563-5269.
- The map of the Navajo Nation, available through our website, is the most
googled map of the Navajo Nation at “Navajomaps.” If you haven’t
seen it yet, go to http://CDD.unm.edu/cspd/
and click on the Navajo Maps button on the right. It includes a breakout
of the Navajo Nation by agencies, with main roads and schools. We have included
links to school websites when we know them. Let us know if your school is
not linked and we will add it.
- Our website also includes a link to the 2006 Southwest Conference on Disability
which will be held during October 4-6, 2006 at the Albuquerque Convention
Center. Further information about the conference can be seen at website
http://CDD.unm.edu/swconf/.
- The Center for Development & Disability at the University of New Mexico
has an online resource center for books, journals and videos for your staff’s
professional development. The resource center currently offers the most
comprehensive collection of disability resources in New Mexico. You can
reach our resource center on the web at http://CDD.unm.edu/linc/index.htm.
- Although we are in our last year of the CSPD contract with the BIA (which
ends September 30), schools may still contact us at any time regarding professional
development training plans and/or activities for the current school year.
Let us know how we might help in facilitating a plan of work for your agency
or school or for providing training above and beyond what we have currently
set out to do in the present scope of work.
