Friday Fax
Date: January 27, 2006
From: Dr. Eugene R. Thompson
Director of Educational Leadership
To keep you updated with activities taking place through
the CSPD efforts on the Navajo Nation, I am sending you a “Friday Fax”
with information about current and upcoming professional development activities.
Current Events
This past week, training and technical assistance was provided
as follows:
- Three on-site school visits were conducted this week in Western Navajo
Agency: Chilchinbeto Community School (January 23); Cottonwood Day School
(January 24); and Rocky Ridge Boarding School (January 25). The purpose
of the visits was to discuss professional development activities for the
academic staff.
- A couple of weeks ago I mentioned the Introduction to the Academic Articulated
Standards in Arizona training that has been scheduled for K-12 teachers
(including special education) and administrators who work in Bureau funded
and operated schools. The staff from the Standards-Based Teaching and Learning
Division of the Arizona Department of Education will conduct the training
from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. The event will take place on March 10, 2006
at the Sinagua High School mini-auditorium B, 3950 E. Butler Ave, Flagstaff.
The three-hour presentation will offer an overview of the standards development
process and the expectations of standards-based teaching. To register, please
visit website: http://www.ade.az.gov/onlineregistration/SelectEvent.asp?viewall=”yes”&G.
You may have to click on the “view calendar format” to get to
the March 10 registration site. Further information can also be obtained
from Brenda Martin at (602) 364-2335. You will want to click on the March
10, 2006 link. Participants will receive a copy of the power point presentation
and materials used in the session to replicate the presentation and build
capacity at their sites. This training should be very helpful and useful
to the Bureau teachers and administrators. It is recommended that teachers
and administrators from the Arizona schools in Ft. Defiance, Chinle, and
Western Navajo agency take advantage of this professional development event
as may be appropriate.
- The Read Across America Day is March, Dr. Seuss’ birthday. The
National Education Association (NEA) has a website at http://www.nea.org/readacross/resources/index.html
with information and kits. Many ideas for events are included including
poetry slams, readers’ theaters for teens, topics for parents on reading
to infants toddlers, or making cat-in-the-hat hats of coffee cans and construction
paper.
