Friday Fax
Date: April 29, 2005
From: Dr. Eugene R. Thompson
Director of Educational Leadership
To keep you updated with activities taking place through
the CSPD efforts on the Navajo Nation, I am sending you a “Friday Fax”
with information about current and upcoming professional development activities.
Current Events
This past week, training and technical assistance was provided
as follows:
- Forty-five home-living assistants (21 west cohort and
24 east cohort) from the Ft. Defiance Agency attended the fifth and final
Spec Educ 201 class (Level II) at the University of New Mexico-Gallup campus
(April 23). Overall, 49 of 52 (94%) home-living assistants will have earned
five-semester credits through the University of New Mexico-Gallup (3 credits
for Spec Educ 201 and 2 credits for Spec Educ 204). Three home-living assistants
are on tract to receive certificates.
- A follow-up on-site visit was conducted with 10 teachers
and 7 assistants at the Dilcon Community School during April 25–26
regarding a teaching reading strategies class taken by the staff last semester.
The follow-up included discussion of modeled teaching and strategies. The
results of the follow-up visit were positive as evidence of skills learned
through last semester’s reading class was observed.
- Thirty-one teachers, administrators, bus drivers, custodians,
counselors, library technicians, maintenance, security officers, and residential
staff, and others participated in the IDEA 2004: New Expectations for School
Staff training at the Pinon Community School to inform staff about changes
in the reauthorized IDEA 2004.
- Professional development plans are underway for a summer
reading strategies training for teachers at the Chi Chil’tah/Jones
Ranch Day School.
- Technical assistance was provided to the Western Navajo
Agency office (April 28) on exploring ideas
about how Title funds could be used.
Finally, you may contact us at any time regarding professional
development training plans and/or activities for the current or future school
years. We always look forward to hearing from you as to how we might facilitate
a plan, including Project IDEAS, for your agency or school or for providing
technical assistance or training above and beyond what we have currently set
out to do in the present scope of work.
