To keep you updated with activities taking place through the CSPD efforts on the Navajo Nation, I am sending you a “Friday Fax” with information about current and upcoming professional development activities.

Current Events

This past week, training and technical assistance was provided as follows:

• Four curriculum mapping training activities that were originally scheduled this week were cancelled as mentioned in previous Friday faxes as follows: Kaibeto Boarding School (April 2); Rocky Ridge Boarding School (April 6); Rock Point Community School (April 7); Kayenta Community School (April 8–9).
• The Fort Defiance Agency Level II residential class that was originally scheduled for April 2 at the UNM-Gallup campus was rescheduled to April 23.
• The Western Navajo Agency Level I residential class (north schools) was conducted April 2 at the Dennehotso Boarding School. Forty-two participants attended the class on Staff Role in Student Development: Managing Behavior and Positive Behavioral Supports. This was a reschedule from February 26 and completes the requirements for the three-credit ECME 115 (Guidance of Young Children) course through the University of New Mexico-Gallup.
• The School-Wide Positive Behavior Support: Implementation of BEST training was conducted on April 7 at the Kaibeto Boarding School for academic, residential, and support staff.
• A meeting was held with the Chinle Agency Education Line Officer to review and provide a summary of the past two school years training activities at the agency and at the schools. The next quarterly meeting will be scheduled during the third quarter.
• The NAU Improving Communities of Practice office attended the Western Navajo Agency curriculum-mapping meeting (April 5); and the administrator’s meeting at the Rocky Ridge Boarding School (April 7).

At this time, we wish to thank Brenda Hardy (Maricopa/Creek) for her dedicated service to the Improving Communities of Practice project during the past year. Brenda officially ended her temporary appointment as an administrative assistant on April 6 in our Gallup office. She will continue with her full-time studies at the University of New Mexico-Gallup majoring in social work. We are hoping to hire someone in the very near future. Thank you Brenda. We will miss you and wish you well in your educational journey.

We always look forward to hearing from you as to how we might facilitate a plan, including Project IDEAS, for your agency or school or for providing technical assistance or training above and beyond what we have currently set out to do in the present scope of work.

Monthly UNM/NAU teleconference

April 14, 2005.

• Meeting with Shiprock Agency special education coordinator at UNM-Gallup to discuss the Project IDEAS training plan.
• On-site visit to the Black Mesa Community School.

April 15-16, 2005

Curriculum mapping cancelled at Rock Point Community School (April 15) and Kayenta Community School (April 16).

April 18, 2005.

IDEA 2004 Institute in Albuquerque.

April 19, 2005.

Parent Conference on IDEA 2004 at the Navajo Nation Museum, Window Rock. Further information: (866) 341-9918, (928) 871-6993, or (505) 726-6301. Conference is co-sponsored by the Growing in Beauty and the Improving Communities of Practice projects.

April 23, 2005.

Level II residential class for the Ft. Defiance Agency home-living assistants (east and west cohorts) at the University of New Mexico-Gallup campus. This class, rescheduled from April 2, 2005, will complete the three-credit Spec Educ 201 course.
