To keep you updated with activities taking place through
the CSPD efforts on the Navajo Nation, I am sending you a “Friday Fax”
with information about current and upcoming professional development activities.
Current Events
This past week, training and technical assistance was provided
as follows:
- Curriculum Development training for general/special
education teachers and the curriculum director that was previously scheduled
for March 30-31 at Rocky Ridge Boarding School was cancelled.
- Curriculum Development training for Chinle Boarding
School that was scheduled for April 1 was cancelled.
- A meeting was held with the Western Navajo Agency staff
(special education coordinator, education specialist, ELO) to review the
past two school years training activities at the agency and at the schools.
The next quarterly meeting will be scheduled for June to be held at Northern
Arizona University.
- One member of the Improving Communities of Practice
project participated in the Association of University Centers on Disabilities
(AUCD) technical assistance meeting on Cultural and Linguistic Competence
meeting in Denver.
Finally, you may contact us at any time regarding professional
development training plans and/or activities for the current or future school
years. We always look forward to hearing from you as to how we might facilitate
a plan, including Project IDEAS, for your agency or school or for providing
technical assistance or training above and beyond what we have currently set
out to do in the present scope of work.
Upcoming Events:
April 2, 2005
- Level I residential class for the Western Navajo Agency
home-living assistants (north schools) at the Dennehotso Boarding School.
Topic: Staff Role in Student Development: Managing Behavior and Positive
Behavioral Supports. This is a re-schedule from February 26 and will complete
the three-credit ECME 115 course.
- The Ft. Defiance Agency Level II residential class originally
scheduled for today at the UNM-Gallup campus has been rescheduled to April
23, 2005 at the UNM-Gallup campus.
- Curriculum Mapping workshop at Kaibeto Boarding School
is cancelled.
April 4, 2005
- Meeting with Chinle Agency to review the past year’s
training activities.
April 6, 2005
- Curriculum Mapping at Rocky Ridge Boarding School is
cancelled.
April 7, 2005
- School-Wide Positive Behavior Support: Implementing
BEST training at the Kaibeto Boarding School for academic, residential,
and support staff.
- Curriculum Mapping is cancelled at Rock Point Community
School.
April 8–9, 2005
- Curriculum Mapping VII training for general/special
education teachers and curriculum director at the Kayenta Community School
is cancelled.
April 13, 2005
- Monthly UNM/NAU teleconference
April 14, 2005
- Meeting with Shiprock Agency special education coordinator
at UNM-Gallup to discuss the agency Project IDEAS training plan.
April 19, 2005
- Parent Conference on IDEA 2004 at the Navajo Nation

April 23, 2005
- Level II residential class for the Ft. Defiance Agency
home-living assistants (east and west cohorts) at the University of New
Mexico-Gallup campus. Topics: Professional Communication: Writing, Speaking,
Record Keeping, and Computer Literacy. This class is rescheduled from April
2, 2005. This will complete the three-credit Spec Educ 201 course.
