Trainings Offered by the Autism Program Network

Presentations:
A 1-2 hours basic overview of the characteristics of autism.

Self-Study Course:
An approximately 2 hour-long course offered to Department of Health adult agencies. This course provides an introductory self-study format to learn about adults with autism using a workbook and video.

Autism Web Course: This course offers 40 modules on Autism Spectrum Disorders (14 are core modules listed as suggested reading) To review, go to: http://cdd.unm.edu/swan/autism_course/.

Introduction to Autism:
A 3-hour general introduction to autism which briefly defines the disorder, outlines diagnostic information and provides information regarding characteristics.

Series of Training:
(Provided through funding from the New Mexico Department of Health, Long Term Services Division) It is recommended that trainings 1-4 (below) be taken as a series, since each build upon the other. Trainings 5 & 6 are additional (optional) trainings.

1. Understanding & Working with Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)
A 6-hour training which provides information on prevalence, cause, diagnostic information, cultural perspective, characteristics, family perspective and resources.

2. Social, Sensory, & Behavior in Persons with ASD
A 6-hour training which will provide an overview of the key sensory, social, and behavioral characteristics and supports for persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

3. Assessment, Communication, & Visual Supports for Persons with ASD
A 6-hour training which will provide an overview of the key assessment considerations, communication characteristics and supports and visual techniques to follow in developing community supports for persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

4. Strategies, Tips & Techniques for Persons with ASD
A 6-hour training which provides information on what to consider when determining strategies for persons with ASD, as well as describing a variety of key strategies and ideas that have proven successful with individuals with ASD.

5. Social Development for Persons with ASD
A 6-hour training that focuses on the social development of individuals on the Autism Spectrum. Social Development will be detailed and social skills strategies will be discussed. A manual will be shared to give suggestions about developing Friendship Groups for people with ASD.

6. Social Stories
A 6-hour video workshop developed by Carol Gray, the creator of Social Stories. This video training, facilitated by SWAN staff members, will provide step-by-step directions in the development of a Social Story. A workbook is supplied.

Trainings 1-6 are offered free of charge to families of persons with autism and to individuals in the following professions: homecare providers/supervisors, behavior therapists, case managers, DOH staff and respite care workers. A $65 fee is charged for Trainings 1-6 to other participants (schools, private therapy, businesses, etc.).

A booklet listing over 30 training options in autism spectrum disorders is also available.
