Augmentative and Alternative Communication This videotape program provides an overview of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and the considerations that should be made in choosing an AAC system for an individual. AAC is a means other than speech that can be used to send a message from one person to another. Augmentative refers to any approach to enhance an individual's existing communication skills. Alternative refers to an individual's primary form of communication when speech is not available. Five individuals who are non-verbal and range in age from two-years to eighteen-years of age are presented in this program to illustrate the considerations that influence the selection of an AAC system. The videotape features best practice concepts involved in the assessment process and highlight culture, motor, sensory and communication needs as critical aspects in the decision making process.
