ABLE Loan Bank The New Mexico Technology Assistance Program (NM TAP) is New Mexico's Tech Act Program under federal funding. NM TAP established the ABLE (Assistive Bank of Loan-able Equipment) statewide loan bank to provide a way for special education students from three-years to twenty-one years and their families to try out communication devices and other assistive devices. To be eligible for an equipment loan, the student's school district or Regional Education Cooperative must have signed a Cooperative Agreement with NM TAP and the need for the assistive technology device must be documented in the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). Equipment trials can take place in the school, home, community and work setting. Ability Center The Ability Center Loan Bank has been established to meet the assistive technology needs of people with disabilities in the areas of home safety and accessibility. Services are provided regardless of age. Albuquerque Independent Living Resource Center The loan bank at the Albuquerque Independent Living Resource Center is available for people of all ages and disabilities who reside in the counties listed. Choices The loan bank at Choices is available to meet the needs of people with disabilities in rural Chaves, Eddy and Lea counties (located in southeastern New Mexico) including tribal communities. The loan bank is located at the Choices office in Roswell. Elks CP Foundation The Elks CP Foundation Loan Bank is located at the PRO (Parents Reaching Out) offices in Los Lunas, NM. The loan bank acts as a statewide clearinghouse for new and recycled equipment of all types. Equipment is available to people of all ages with disabilities. The loan bank process is very informal and the inventory changes regularly. People with disabilities, family members or professionals needing a certain type of equipment should call the office to check the inventory or to make a request. People who have equipment they no longer can use are encouraged to donate it to the Elks CP Foundation Loan Bank for use by others in need. Los Lunas Community Program The Los Lunas Community Program supports a loan bank for people with developmental disabilities who need to try out high-tech augmentative communication devices to determine the most appropriate device or system for them. The equipment is loaned to the speech language pathologist for supervised evaluation and trial of the device. MORE (McKinley Opportunity and Resource Enterprises) Families, therapists, teachers and other service providers of young children between the ages of birth and five-years of age can access the MORE assistive technology bank. Children must reside in McKinley County to be eligible for equipment loans. The loan bank inventory ranges from single switches to positioning equipment. The MORE Loan Bank was initiated through funds from the New Mexico Department of Health Family Infant Toddler Program and supplemented with other donations. Navajo-ABLE
(Assistive Bank of Loan Equipment) Services available to individuals, family members, educators, therapists and others who live on the Navajo Nation as well as Canoncito, Alamo, and Ramah Navajo Reservations. Hearing The loan bank serves people of all ages with disabilities who reside in NM or are a family member of a consumer. The loan bank process enables consumers to borrow specialized equipment for the home. There is an application process and equipment is loaned for 90 days at no charge. A second program, The Telecommunications Distribution Program, is specifically for consumers who are hearing-impaired or speech impaired. This program provides only specialized telephone equipment. The 90-day rule does not apply to this program. As long as the consumer resides in NM, the equipment stays in their home. San Juan Center for Independence
