Many times, parents, guardians and other
informal caregivers can give valuable insight to the funding source regarding
the client’s need for a communication device. It is suggested that these
letters be as short as possible to make your point. Included below are samples
of "informal" letters of support.
Parent or Caregivers Letter of Outline:
-
Medical diagnosis of the person who needs the communication system.
-
Discuss how the client’s inability to communicate prevents or
compromises adequate medical treatment.
-
Give examples of how the client’s needs are not being met as a result of
the communication impairment and the medical necessity of treating the
impairment.
-
How the communication system would improve future medical treatments and
the client’s health.
-
Talk about trials with the communication system and your observations
about the difference that it made especially as it relates to health/medical
concerns.
-
Other supportive comments that are specific to the person who needs the
communication system.
Samples of how a letter might look
The examples we have provided have been adapted from the DynaVox Systems
Funding Guide. They are meant to be samples
that help you write your own letters based on individual needs and real
situations not depicted here. Medical and diagnosis descriptions are fabricated
to illustrate points that would be helpful and do not depict any actual persons.
