Syllabus


Course Title: 
Assessment and Interventions: Case Studies in Deafblindness, an online web course.

Course Purpose:
The course utilizes the DISCUSS model developed at the health Science Center, School of Medicine, Center for Development & Disability. The web course was developed to encourage participants to discuss how to use assessment and intervention strategies through case students with a variety of children and youth who are deaf-blind. Participants will be invited to share their knowledge, ideas and feelings with their fellow participants.

Course Sponsor:
This course was created for professional development by the Project for New Mexico Children and Youth who are Deaf-blind, Center for Development and Disability. Funding was provided by the U.S. Department of Education, the New Mexico State Department of Education – Special Education Unit, the Albuquerque Public Schools and the New Mexico State Department of Health. Participants in the past have inquired about receiving university credit for their participation.

All participants wil receive a certificate of completion fron the University of New Mexico School of Medicine Center for Development and Disability.

The cost to take the course is free to all New Mexico citizens. For non-New Mexico residents we are asking a $100.00 fee.

Course Objectives

  • Describe various diagnoses and syndromes that effect or result in vision and hearing loss

  • Describe the effect that vision loss, hearing loss and vision and hearing loss combined has on the development of the child.

  • Demonstrate communication skills needed for successful interdisciplinary teamwork

  • Demonstrate the communication skills necessary for the successful collaboration between families and agencies that support their children.

  • Utilize assessment reports for program planning.

  • Develop and implement intervention strategies for working with children and youth who deaf-blindness.

  • Become familiar with the intent of IDEA relative to the following:

  • Access to general education curriculum
    o Transition
    o FAPE/LRE (Free Appropriate Public Education/Least Restrictive Environment)
    o Describe advocacy issues that families who have a child that is deaf-blind may ex
    perience.In addition to these overall objectives, each case will have individual objectives found within each of the cases.

Classroom through completion of caucus tutorial
Visit the resource room and read about online
Discussions and PBL
Case #1 – Michael
Read profiles of case, begin to respond to questions.
Research information & report to group.
Complete at least five questions from the case.
Complete remaining questions for Michael.
Select your "choice case".

Choose from the following cases:

Case A: Esperanza

• Case B: Juanita

• Case C: Joey

After choosing, begin responding to questions, research information and reporting to group

Complete your choice case.
Identify if you have a case to develop (a student you are currently working with)
If you do not have a child currently, identify if you would like to team with a participant working on a case or if you would like to work through one of the choice cases.
Participant Case Develop unanswered questions about child.
Develop and post Child Profile
Choice case: begin to respond to questions
Develop unanswered questions from family perspective. Develop and post Family Profile
Develop and post School Profile
Choice case: continue to research answers, respond to case questions.
Participant case: develop and present plan for child and family.
Choice case: Visit participant case and provide feedback.
