Friday Fax
Date: August 25, 2006
From: Dr. Eugene R. Thompson
Director of Educational Leadership
To keep you updated with activities taking place through
the CSPD efforts on the Navajo Nation, I am sending you a “Friday Fax”
with information about current and upcoming professional development activities.
Current Events
This past week, training and technical assistance was provided
as follows:
- Greetings and welcome to a new school year. By now, most of the schools
are back in session for the fall semester. To those seasoned teachers, administrators
and support personnel, we wish you continuing success in your work to promote
a positive future for students through your commitment to educational excellence.
Although our CSPD project is ending September 30, 2006, we are continuing
to help in your training and technical assistance needs across schools in
the BIA system on the Navajo Nation. We hope this can continue in some way
after the project ends next month. In the meantime, we are also continuing
to send out our weekly Friday faxes to all schools, which can also be downloaded,
online at http://www.CDD.unm.edu/cspd/.
- We are pleased that the Part B Final Regulations implementing the 2004
reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
has been released as of August 3, 2006. The official version of the Part
B Final Regulations was published in the Federal Register on August 14.
A link to the regulations can be found at www.ed.gov/IDEA. A fact sheet,
Raising the Achievement of Students with Disabilities: New Ideas for IDEA,
which accompanied the announcement of the Part B Final Regulations can also
be found at: http://www.ed.gov/admins/lead/speced/ideafactsheet.html.
- The final on-site school visits to correction action schools will be scheduled
during the month of September to follow up on special education professional
development activities.
- Technical assistance was provided to Mariano Lake Community School for
professional development training and reading classes for teachers.
- The Improving Communities of Practice (ICOP) project at Northern Arizona
University is taking the lead in providing the Level I Residential class
for dormitory staff in Chinle Agency. The three-credit course (ECME 115)
will be offered on five consecutive Saturday in September at the Chinle
Boarding School. The NAU project office has been in contact with those schools
that have dormitory staff that have not taken the first class.
Schools may still contact us during the next month about how we might help
in facilitating a plan of work for your agency or school or for providing
training above and beyond what we have currently set out to do in the present
scope of work.
