Friday Fax
Date: March 3, 2006
From: Dr. Eugene R. Thompson
Director of Educational Leadership
To keep you updated with activities taking place through
the CSPD efforts on the Navajo Nation, I am sending you a “Friday Fax”
with information about current and upcoming professional development activities.
Current Events
This past week, training and technical assistance was provided
as follows:
- The three-hour Introduction to the Academic Articulated Standards in
Arizona workshop for teachers and administrators who work in BIA funded/operated
schools in Arizona is a week from today on March 10 at the Sinagua High
School, Flagstaff. There is still time to register online at website: http://www.ade.az.gov/SBTL/default.asp.
There is a $30 registration fee for the workshop. The Arizona Academic Standards
forms the basis of all curriculum and instruction in Arizona; therefore,
the AIMS is directly derived from the standards. This is critical information
for general education teachers for instructional planning. Special educators
are also directly affected. The IDEA requires that IEP and MET teams consider
how a student’s disability affects the student’s involvement
and progress in the general curriculum (the Arizona Academic Standards).
These teams are also required to include consideration of state assessments
(which would be the results of the AIMS) in their reviews of existing data
and present levels of academic achievement. Additionally, annual IEP goals
must include annual and functional goals that reflect the needs that are
identified through these assessments.
