To keep you updated with activities taking place through
the CSPD efforts on the Navajo Nation, I am sending you a “Friday Fax”
with information about current and upcoming professional development activities.
Current Events
This past week, training and technical assistance was provided
as follows:
- Curriculum Development training (day two) for general/special
education teachers and the curriculum director was conducted at the Kayenta
Community School.
- The Level I class for Western Navajo Agency home-living
assistants was conducted at the Kayenta Community School (north schools)
and Tuba City Boarding School (south schools).
- The Level II class for Ft. Defiance Agency home-living
assistants was conducted at the UNM-Gallup (March 5).
- Reading and Tutoring Strategies for Reading Specialists
and Assistants training was conducted at the Rock Point Community School.
- Test Taking Strategies training was conducted for special/general
education teachers and assistants at the Tonalea Day School (March 9).
- Guidance and Tutoring Activities training was conducted
for residential staff, residential supervisors, executive director, and
parents at the Pinon Community School on March 10. A total of 28 staff participated
in the training.
- Curriculum Mapping workshop that was previously scheduled
for special and general education teachers on March 10 at the Rock Point
High School has been rescheduled to March 17.
- The fourth follow-up for 8 home-living assistants was
conducted at the Crystal Boarding School (March 10). The topic was of the
training was Developing a Professional Portfolio.
- A technical assistance discussion was provided to 15
special education staff in the Shiprock Agency (March 11). The topics focused
on transition, placement, eligibility, and invitation with staff demonstration
of the Student Information System (SIS) software program.
- A teleconference was conducted this week between the
Navajo Nation’s “Growing in Beauty” program and the Center
for Development and Disability to assign conference responsibilities for
the upcoming Parent Conference on IDEA 2004 to be held in Window Rock on
April 19. The planning committee will continue to meet and/or conduct teleconferences.

We are happy to announce that the redesign of the
Improving Communities of Practice website has been completed and is online
at http://CDD.unm.edu/cspd/. Special features include the Friday Fax, the
Navajo Special Education Glossary, and an online technical assistance and
training request form. We expect to provide the best experience possible for
users seeking information about professional development training and technical
assistance activities.
Finally, you may contact us at any time regarding professional
development training plans and/or activities for the current or future school
years. We always look forward to hearing from you as to how we might facilitate
a plan for your agency or school or for providing technical assistance or
training above and beyond what we have currently set out to do in the present
scope of work.

Meeting with the Ft. Defiance Agency staff to discuss the
implementation of Project IDEAS training activities.
March 16, 2005
- Curriculum Mapping workshop for general/special education
teachers and the curriculum director at the Chinle Boarding School.
- The Curriculum Mapping workshop that was scheduled
for general and special education teachers on this date has been cancelled.
The workshop may be rescheduled at a later date.
March 17, 2005
Curriculum Mapping workshop for special and general education
teachers at the Rock Point High School. This is rescheduled from March 10.
March 18, 2005
Curriculum Mapping workshop for general/special education
teachers and the curriculum director at the Rock Point Elementary School.
March 19, 2005
- Curriculum Mapping workshop for general/special education
teachers and the curriculum director at the Rock Point High School.
- Level II residential class for the Ft. Defiance Agency
home-living assistants (east and west cohorts) at the UNM-Gallup.
